WordPress 15th Anniversary in Cebu was attended by developers, designers, and bloggers. The event started with getting to know each other. Then, everybody shared personal information about their current affiliations and hobbies. Of course, we treated everyone with food and drinks to celebrate 15 fruitful years with WordPress.

Cebu WordPress Meetup in March: Exciting Group!

“We thought we could not pull off two WordPress Meetups in one weekend but we’re glad we did,” said Brennan Mercado, one of the organizers of WordPress Cebu Meetup, a growing community of WordPress enthusiasts in the city.

The two #WordPressWeekend Meetups were held last March 24, 2018, at the A SPACE Cebu, a co-working space/creative hub, at Crossroads in Banilad.

There was one session dedicated to bloggers (“Creating a WordPress Website in 30 mins”) and the developers’ group had theirs (“How to Create and Submit a WordPress Plugin”) shortly. Having separate tracks was done to address the various interests of the WordPress community in Cebu.

The organizing committee did face a few challenges at the onset. But everything fell into place when the resource speakers confirmed their attendance.

“We were fortunate to have Andrew de la Serna from Automattic. He flew in all the way from Davao to support the growing community in Cebu” Brennan added.

Andrew then discussed 7 easy steps in setting up a WordPress blog. He also shared his experiences as one of the pioneering WordPress bloggers in the Philippines.

The developers’ session was facilitated by Dorell James, a Full Stack developer and one of the community co-organizers of Laravel Cebu. He detailed how he created and then published his helpful WordPress plugin.

Needless to say that the entire process was not a walk in the park. But DJ learned a lot from this experience and shared some tips with the group as well.

The organizers were also impressed by the attendance turnout. A total of 20 bloggers and 30 developers attended the two sessions. There were some coming from cities outside Cebu. JP Soledad, an SEO specialist and a mentalist from Tacloban, gamely performed an impromptu magic trick that afternoon.

Since the Cebu WordPress community is growing, they are actively looking for more volunteers to helm future Cebu WordPress Meetups. They are also planning now for Cebu’s first WordCamp that will happen sometime in the second half of 2018.

Cebu WordPress Meetup to launch #WordPressWeekend

Less than a month after their maiden #WordPressWednesday gathering, Cebu WordPress Meetup will launch its first #WordPressWeekend this coming March 24, Saturday at A SPACE Cebu.

“The change in schedule, from a weekday to a weekend, will hopefully allow more WordPress developers, designers, and bloggers to join this time,” said Rome Nicolas, one of the #WPCebu organizers.

“We realized that we are a diverse group that’s why this Saturday, we will have two tracks – one for bloggers and one for developers,” he added.

The first session – “Creating a WordPress Website in 30 mins” will be facilitated by Andrew de la Serna from Automattic.

Dorell James, an established WordPress plugin publisher, will talk about  “How to Create and Submit a WordPress Plugin.

Only 20 slots are opened for each track. To register, Cebu WordPress Meetup can be reached through Meetup. Updates are published at wpcebu.wordpress.com.

Cebu WordPress Meetup’s #WordPressWednesday: Hello Cebu!

Thank you for joining us in our first ever #WordPressWednesday meetup, Cebu!

It was a short but meaningful meetup that gathered about 50 local WordPress enthusiasts  – from bloggers to developers and from business owners to company managers.

We also had a short panel interview with these awesome WordPress users: Jacque Belhida-Doring, founder of Cebu Digital Link; Sebastian Thoss, a German entrepreneur/developer visiting the city; Rome Nicolas, our fellow organizer and founder of Cebu Content Creators; and Eugene Alegiojo, a developer from Beaver Builder.

We spent an hour discussing what has improved in WordPress and how we can take advantage of the platform to improve our individual careers. At the end of the event, we networked with fellow attendees and made new connections for future meetups.

We will not be able to do it without the support of our vibrant community! To our fellow WordPress developers, designers, bloggers, and users who took time to be at ASPACE Cebu for our first ever meetup as a community, daghang salamat!

We are looking forward to doing more events and activities with the community in the coming months, Cebu.

Of course, we will not be able to host Cebu WordPress Meetup’s #WordPressWednesday without the support we got from organizations who believed in our vision. We would like to thank the following generous sponsors:

ASPACE Cebu, for accommodating our event and being generous in giving away 1-Day Pass to 5 lucky attendees;

Yoast, for raffling away over $600 worth of goodies – 4 premium Yoast plugins, 2 local SEO plugins, and 4 e-book bundles;

Beaver Builder, for donating pizzas for everyone who attended; and, of course,

WordPress, for the swags we shared with everyone during the event.

WordPress users to hold meetup in Cebu

Calling all WordPress developers, designers, and bloggers in Cebu! This coming February 28, Wednesday, the first #WordPressWednesday will be held in A SPACE Cebu.

With the theme “Hello Cebu,” the event will have a WordPress-related discussion and networking with the attendees.

“This is just the first of the many events we’re going to do this year that will focus on connecting the WordPress users and professionals who benefited from this open-source platform,” said Rumejan Barbarona, one of the community organizers of Cebu WordPress Meetup, the group behind the event.

“With the support of the Cebuano community, we hope to hold the first ever WordCamp Cebu later this year,” Barbarona added.

To register, Cebu WordPress Meetup can be reached through Meetup.com and Facebook group. Updates are published at wpcebu.wordpress.com.
