“We thought we could not pull off two WordPress Meetups in one weekend but we’re glad we did,” said Brennan Mercado, one of the organizers of WordPress Cebu Meetup, a growing community of WordPress enthusiasts in the city.
There was one session dedicated to bloggers (“Creating a WordPress Website in 30 mins”) and the developers’ group had theirs (“How to Create and Submit a WordPress Plugin”) shortly. Having separate tracks was done to address the various interests of the WordPress community in Cebu.
The organizing committee did face a few challenges at the onset. But everything fell into place when the resource speakers confirmed their attendance.
“We were fortunate to have Andrew de la Serna from Automattic. He flew in all the way from Davao to support the growing community in Cebu” Brennan added.
Andrew then discussed 7 easy steps in setting up a WordPress blog. He also shared his experiences as one of the pioneering WordPress bloggers in the Philippines.
The developers’ session was facilitated by Dorell James, a Full Stack developer and one of the community co-organizers of Laravel Cebu. He detailed how he created and then published his helpful WordPress plugin.
Needless to say that the entire process was not a walk in the park. But DJ learned a lot from this experience and shared some tips with the group as well.
The organizers were also impressed by the attendance turnout. A total of 20 bloggers and 30 developers attended the two sessions. There were some coming from cities outside Cebu. JP Soledad, an SEO specialist and a mentalist from Tacloban, gamely performed an impromptu magic trick that afternoon.
Since the Cebu WordPress community is growing, they are actively looking for more volunteers to helm future Cebu WordPress Meetups. They are also planning now for Cebu’s first WordCamp that will happen sometime in the second half of 2018.
